DIY: Cuticle Oil/Nail Strengthener

Wednesday, January 06, 2016

Hello, beauties! Hope the New Year is already bringing y’all a lot to cherish. Most of us face the issue of having brittle nails at some part of our lives. Besides, regular use of nail polish turns the nails pale and cuticles dry. Not to forget hangnails that bother us all, which is why we are all lured by the commercially available, expensive cuticle oils and nail strengtheners.. Today I (Samra) have brought you an easy peasy yet effective DIY nail strengthener/cuticle oil recipe.

Things Required:

i.  Two Vitamin E Gel Capsules
ii.  5 ml Sweet Almond Oil
iii. 5 ml Castor Oil
iv. Small glass container
v. Bottle with applicator (You can also use cotton buds for application if the bottle you’re using is without an application brush)
vi. Pair of scissors (or a pin)

Instructions:

i.  Cut two Vitamin E gel capsules open with the help of scissors or simply prick them open with a  sterilized needle/pin. Pour the gel in a small glass container and discard the capsules.

ii.  Take equal amounts (I took 5ml of each) of sweet almond oil and castor oil.

iii. Transfer the Vitamin E gel and the concoction of oils to a clean, empty bottle. I chose a bottle with  a nail polish brush to avoid messy application/and wastage of product.

Note: To mix the ingredients well, roll the bottle between the palms of your hands in order to avoid the air from being trapped, and forming air bubbles.

Application:

Swipe the oil on the nail beds and cuticles of your hands and feet one by one. Massage it gently to get the blood circulating, until it is completely absorbed. Apply it regularly before going to bed.

Note: Castor oil has the property of settling down at the bottom, so don’t forget to roll the bottle between the palms of your hands before each use.

My Experience:

I have had weak, brittle nails that bend, peel and break easily since forever. Pumping up my protein and water intake did not help either. So, I thought of applying cuticle oil/nail strengthener topically on my nails and cuticles.

Enriched with the goodness of Vitamin E, Sweet Almond Oil is a natural antioxidant, which makes it very effective for nail care. Vitamin E Gel Capsules are added for an extra doze of Vitamin E, which further protects the cuticles of fingernails from drying and peeling. Castor oil, which is vegetable based oil, is a great moisturizer and is known for its nail strengthening property. It moisturizes the cuticles and nail bed and prevents the appearance of hangnails and nails from breaking. I swear by this DIY nail strengthener/cuticle oil because of its deep conditioning properties.

It is an economical substitute to the high end cuticle oils/nail strengtheners. I was amazed to see the results. Made up of simple and very few ingredients, this one proved to be a life saver. It strengthened my stubborn nails considerably within a week, and after a month, my nails eventually grew longer and less likely to flake. Rich in Vitamin E, this growth potion is the perfect food for my nails, which has nourished and strengthened them like never before.

P.S. All the ingredients used are easily available at local drugstores.
